Good Afternoon Alexandria Radio Club,
As the chair of the membership retention committee, I would like to
discuss a couple of areas were we can participate as a club and pass on/gain
some knowledge along the way.
As I have explained in the past, I am a big fan of Parks on the Air (POTA).
It is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors while the weather is
cooperative, an opportunity to talk to many hams throughout the world
(especially for us DXers), get together as a club and play RADIO, and the
perfect chance to exercise our skills and equipment outside our shacks. I
would love to schedule a POTA event for us sometime in April. During our
next club meeting, I will briefly explain/discuss what POTA is and get a
consensus on getting out and activating a state or national park in our
area.
One of the first things I brought up to club leadership during a recent
leadership meeting was that a good idea for us to get others involved in our
meetings and help others explore other aspects of the hobby, especially any
activities that involve more than just a radio and its basic components.
Some of us like to build antennas, others like to use single board computers
or other similar devices and incorporate them into our ham radio activities.
There are also many different aspects of ham radio that many of us have not
explored. It could be that we are not familiar with them, don't have a
strong enough knowledge base to understand them (I know I am in that
category), not sure how to start down the path of using them, or have other
reasons why.
Now that we have the 30 minutes during our monthly meetings to have a chance
to discuss these areas, I am asking everyone if they have any topics they
would like to discuss or learn more about? If so, please email me so I can
compile a list to present to club leadership.
There are so many areas out there, please let me know what you have an
interest in. I could give you mine, what it would take the rest of this
week for everyone to read!!!
Thanks for your time.
73,
Bob KO4ZIK
