Hi Jason,
My plan is to not set up my own node but rather tap into Wires X over a repeater. W4BRM let’s me connect once in a while. I guess one thing I don’t understand is whether more that one person can access it at the same time. If it is only one person at a time then I probably will drop the idea and use APRS SMS instead.
I listen a lot to Wires on 444.450 in Stafford WS4VA. It seems out of transmitter range even at 50W which is odd.
I already have APRS set up on my FT5D and 991A. That works fine as a text messaging system. It’s not real time but it does get your message out and it doesn’t care how many people are working it.
PS I am a new ham too. Got tech license last year. Working to go General.

I also use it in the RF mode and I am usually able to get into my node from my mobile out to 5 miles or so from the house on JBAB. I use my FT-3D HT to access the node within about 2 miles. I have it set to 147.420 Simplex with no tone. K3MRC runs a node in Upper Marlboro that I can hit from my QTH and usually works within about 10 miles of the station. He runs it on 145.430. Locally, there aren’t a lot of repeater based options around for Wires-X.

Josh from Ham Radio Crash Course has a Quadnet reflector which is on DMR, YSF, DSTAR, and Wires-X. On Wires-X it is #61221. Reach out If you have other questions.
