Alexandria Radio Club is inviting you to a Tech-Talk via Zoom on November 19th at 7:00 p.m. This is the fourth Tech-Talk in a series of talks to be held via Zoom by Alexandria Radio Club. These topics are the results of a club survey conducted this last spring with club members. All sessions are open to all hams. These talks will be normally be conducted monthly on the 4th Friday. The purpose of these sessions is to provide an opportunity for in-depth conversations, including Q&A, on a variety of ham radio topics. This follows up on ideas from club members desiring to build on their knowledge of ham radio. It is also hoped that these sessions will build on club mentoring efforts for our newest hams and will serve to promote their continuing interest in club activities. Finally, it is hoped that these sessions will lead to more interest in operator license upgrades enabled by increased knowledge of ham radio.

This Tech Talk is scheduled as follows:

Many club members are interested in learning more about the very popular FT8 mode. In this presentation Ian will discuss requirements in detail for antennas, transceivers, soundcard Interfaces, computer Hardware, computer software, Logging, WSJT-X, and visualization (pskreporter, Geochron, etc.) Ian will conclude his presentation with a live demonstration and Q&A.

Ian learned electronics early when he started building Heathkit electronic projects in the early 1970s with his grandfather, including a 12" B&W TV kit while in high school as part of a radio/TV servicing course. Ian was licensed in 2000 about the same time he joined Alexandria Radio Club. Since that time, Ian has been a club mainstay over the years, holding many club officer positions, including club President, Vice President and Treasurer. With this background experience in the club, Ian has continued to serve a very important continuity role for the club. Currently, Ian’s individual ham activities include DXing, Morse code, contesting, building stuff, and teaching. He maintains a website at http://www.n8ik.net/ where he works diligently to keep the ham radio content pretty current and interesting. Ian has earned many ham radio awards, including DXCC mixed/CW/SSB (159 total), plus DXCC on 20/15/10m, WAS mixed/CW/SSB/Digital, and WPX mixed/CW/SSB/Digital. With over 8,100 QSOs on LOTW, Ian has established a very impressive 52 percent confirmation rate for ham radio contacts.
