For those still working to get stable Winlink configurations going, here is a novel approach. I will be giving it a try today.

Subject: [winlink-programs-group] Sound card settings for different modes

I often get questions about setting the sound card levels for the different software modems used with Winlink. I have found with different radios, interfaces, and modem software (Vara HF, ARDOP, Packet and Vara FM), I need to set the Playback and Recording levels differently to achieve best performance. If you switch things around a lot, or change modes frequently, it can be a problem to remember all the settings.

I ran across a small application that can set the sound card levels from the command line, and have been experimenting with it. I asked the author for a few additional features, and he was happy to add them. The application can be found here:

https://rlatour.com/setvol/

I can now quickly set the sound card Playback and Record levels for different modes just by executing a small batch file. For example, here is the batch file to set my IC-7100 for Vara HF:

@echo off

cd /D "C:\Ham\Soundmodem\"

setvol 85 beep device IC-7100 RX (USB Audio CODEC )

setvol 50 beep device IC-7100 TX (USB Audio CODEC )

I have built similar batch files for the different modes and placed shortcuts to them on the desktop:

In this case I have renamed the IC-7100 sound card in Windows to:

IC-7100 RX for the Record levels (receive)

IC-7100 TX for the Playback levels (transmit)

This is strongly advised if you have more than one sound card device attached to your computer:

This might be useful for others....
