At its meeting today, Tuesday, March 17, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors declared a local state of emergency in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. Today's action follows Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's  <https://www.governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/all-releases/2020/march/headline-853537-en.html> declaration of a state of emergency on March 12, and a  <https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation-declaring-national-emergency-concerning-novel-coronavirus-disease-covid-19-outbreak/> national emergency declaration by President Donald Trump on March 13.

The local emergency declaration is primarily a financial mechanism that provides greater flexibility and authority for the county in purchasing hard to find resources and supplies. It also increases the authorities granted to the county to protect the health and safety of the community and provide emergency assistance in such a rapidly evolving incident.

This declaration streamlines and expedites Fairfax County Government's access to emergency disaster funding and it allows the county to use its authority to procure goods to address the emergency. -- Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay
