Good morning group,
We had a good turnout at the workshop yesterday, with about eight people in total participating. When the group is smaller like that it actually works very well, since we can tailor the workshop to the interests of the participants.
Temperatures dropped down lower than we were expecting, so that may have kept a few of the less-hardy souls at home. We lucked out though and the sunshine actually warmed things up quite well. We will have to see what the turnout is in June when we do the next one in Soldtna.
There was a LOT of interest in the material. What I'm finding with the workshops is that they tend to attract a lot of newer operators. That works out great, since it gives us a chance to reach out and help new hams before the get "stuck" and start becoming discouraged. There is an enormous gap between what the licensing exams cover, and what you have to be able to do in order to build a station, and I think that gap is not always being covered appropriately. It really does require some hands-on time.
I forgot to hand out the sign-up sheet, but we should have a few of the participants contacting us in the following months. I think we may have a few new POTA operators in the near future.
Ed, as for the net, I was just able to make you out with my yagi pointed towards Nikiski. I could hear your transmissions, but you were so faint that your signal didn't even budge the S-meter. You were definitely getting out though.
73,
Brandon
