[AK-VHF] Contest in the books

Conditions were not all that great in the northwestern corner of the lower 48. We almost got shut out to the east, though I did manage a surprise contact with KP4AJ. We got 270 QSOs (including dupes) and 64 multipliers. Not too bad given the subdued propagation conditions.
I ran some skeds with Ken, NL7B when he was roving in BP83. We tried MSK144 and Q65-60A modes with no success. I heard not a peep. Later on I heard VE7BC in Vancouver call Ken, but Ken told me he didn't hear BC. Sunday afternoon, a few of us found WL7N in Ketchikan calling incessant CQs on FT8. He wouldn't answer any of us, which was puzzling. A few minutes later, I heard him calling Ken a few times, but it looked as if they did not make contact. So, Ken was getting out, but conditions didn't see fit to get us together for a QSO this time. And WL7N must have had his antenna pointed north when we heard him.

BTW, we're approaching to the summer solstice, meaning there is still a lot of potentially good propagation for DX. Keep your ears and eyes on 6m. You never know what you'll get!

Hope you had fun in the contest.  I got busy and have my log submitted
to ARRL 30-minutes after the close (7pm Sunday in AK).  Worked four
bands, 18 contacts, and 11 grid multipliers (5 grids on 6m) for a score
of 242.  6m-FT8 opened to CM97 and CM87 in northern Calif. for an hour
around noon on Saturday.

I was amazed to make contacts on 6m to the north with my small yagi
pointed SE.  Also two contacts on 432 using only a vertical.

Had a nice visit with Brandon and his girlfriend over lunch at Senior
Pancho's in Soldotna.

You only have ten days from end of the contest to submit your log, so do
not dally.  Please enter Alaska VHF-Up Group in your entry for the club
to get credit in the contest.

73, Ed, FD is only two weeks form now.
