[AK-VHF] RSVP: VHF+ NET on the 4th of July - 144.200 USB

Brandon,

I had my K3 listening to 14.292 per Craig's e-mail. I guess I should
have been on 40m. I did tune up the inverted-V on 7090 but heard
nothing, then checked into the "swap net" on 3920 at 11:15; heard NC
from Homer at S9+ (but learned he was running a kW).

2m SSB Net had poor prop to Anch. again. KL6M could hardly copy me
and vice versa. 220 worked better (one-way). Later found my220
radio worked on memory channel but not using the VFO?? Checked RF
out and was the same.
KL4E, KB7FSK, WL7AU, KL0YO/m, KL7XJ and KL6M on 144.200; KL7XJ and
KL6M on 223.50

After net tested with Dale and we made 2-way on 224.94 Rptr and then
I discovered 223.50 on memory worked. Not a clue why radio not heard
with VFO=223.50.

On the Iditarod we used wire dipoles on 80 and 40m. No tune as we
had a clip out section to shorten for 40m on each leg. Usually our
dipoles were strung low due to difficulty hanging them in
winter. Typical height was 15-20 foot which actually enhanced NVIS
operation over a few miles to a couple hundred miles. Most remote
stations had 100w radios. We did a lot of relaying dog traffic
reports for those who could not reach Anchorage HQ.

Hope the stay in the cabin was enjoyable.
