Hi Ed,
Good to hear you guys too. I was having issues with my radio and I think
that was why I was fading in and out. On the FT-817 the power icon
blinks when you are running a full 5 watts. When you are running 2.5
watts the icon is the same, but does not blink. It was so cold up at the
trailhead that the LCD screen was responding slowly, and wasn't
blinking. I couldn't tell whether I was running 5 watts or 2.5, lol.
I think I got some photos of the marine layer while I was up there
yesterday. I often notice a band of air that is very visibly distorting
the view of the mountains on the far side of Cook Inlet. All I had was
my cell phone, so the photos are not very clear, but I still posted some
of the better ones on Facebook. Take a look.
I did find that POTA has a facebook group like we do, and I've started
looking through their posts to get an idea of how things work. It looks
like a lot of fun actually. Might be a good club activity for us or the
MARA group. All bands are allowable, and by choosing a good location VHF
links would work. The Glen Alps Trailhead, for example, is within
Chugach State Park, which is included in POTA.
