[AK-VHF] Fwd: September VHF Contest

Note that Ken did a rove from Fairbanks to Homer
for a previous Jan VHF Contest.

Be nice if a few folks get on for the contest to
try making contact with him. My guess anyone out
in Big Lake to Willow have a good shot and some
areas in Anchorage (especially from parking lot up at Table mtn trailhead).

In the past KL7DTW Eklutna had regular skeds with
KL7EKB in Fairbanks via bounce off Denali
peak. I worked KL7EKB using only 150w on 2m-SSB
and am 70 mile further south having to shoot over
Mt. Susitna to hit Denali. Ken is SE of the peak
so maybe a path exists to the east of Mt. Sue.

Unlikely to work on FM so one should use SSB or CW.

But for the southcentral area FM simplex is workable if that is all you have.

>Ok, the forecast for the Denali State Park area
>is still good for Saturday, so as of now, I’m
>planning on making this trip. We will drive down
>Friday night, and plan on hiking up the Little
>Coal Creek trail to Kesugi Ridge Saturday
>morning. 4-5 miles up to Kesugi Mtn, and 3,000
>ft of elevation gain, so I hope to be set up no
>later than 1 p.m. local time, and earlier if
>possible. I will be in Grid BP52du, at N62d
>52’00”, W149d40’45”. The location is actually
>east-south-east of Denali, so I think I’m too
>far south to bounce a signal off the range; may
>have to knife-edge over the Talkeetnas, though
>the line of sight looks pretty good.
>
>I’ll have an HT with APRS with me; hoping I can
>hit an Igateway repeater to self-spot.
>
>I’ll plan on starting on 2m ssb. I’ll also have
>70 cm and 6 meter, ssb, cw, and FM for all 3.
>I’ll use the frequencies you list on the VHF-UP
>website, with vertical polarization for 2m and
>70cm. Antennas are a small log periodic for 2/70
>and a 6m dipole. My power will be limited by my
>gel batteries; those things weigh a ton, and
>we’ll have lots of weight with the radios,
>antennas, bear protection, etc. I will likely
>have to keep the power down to maintain the
>battery (10-20 watts
?). If I don’t hear ANYBODY, I’ll try 2m CW.
>
>If it is successful, I’d like to try Grid BP53
>on my drive home. If you’re interested in
>trying, there’s a potential spot at the
>Hurricane Gulch bridge (just inside the grid),
>especially with your 2m EME array trained in my
>direction. It might be a long shot, but worth a
>few minutes to try. Not sure yet if that will be
>Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
>
>If anyone would like to get in touch regarding
>this schedule, they should email me by Friday
>morning. If unforeseen circumstances prevent us
>from going, I’ll shoot you a note.
