[ADXA] BE ALERT - E51EME

Of course I have further comments !!!!!! 😊
If you’re going to discuss antennas you need to understand signal propagation and what works best in different situations. Its not so much a factor on between 10 and 28 MHz but above and below it does, especially on 50 MHz. Different heights will produce different results depending on the type of propagation. F2 is a bit different than Sporadic E but you can get to a point where you’re splitting hairs.
I’ve had stacked six meter antennas for a long time and can switch between them individually. While there have only been two situations where I could not hear the DX station on the higher antenna, I have never seen a situation where I could not hear the DX on an antenna at 27 ft, 52’, 77’ for 102’. The one thing I do notice is the higher the antenna the higher the noise floor.
So, Frank’s statement is correct, of course, (who am I to dispute E.F. “Frank” Hutton??) and 50 ft is an excellent height choice. Will you lose something with the antenna at 30 ft or 100 ft? Maybe, but most likely not. Remember, 6 meters isn’t called the “Magic Band” because it’s a cute name. The different propagation methods at play can open and close at any time and your buddy a few miles down the road may not hear anything.
Bottom line – BE READY WITH WHATEVER YOU HAVE IN THE AIR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

George, read W3LPL's paper on six meter antenna height. 50' the best and 40' no problem. My antenna is at about 80' and I can tell people with lower antennas are smoking me. This is a 28' boom. I just didn't know at the time. Many ops have antennas they can switch between at different heights. When I first got exposed to six meter DX in WDC, it was when F2 was hopping. Everyone told me bigger and higher for F2. That might be true but Frank, LPL, says 50' is best for E DX. Maybe Joel has further comments. I would love to lower my six meter antenna but it would be terrific job.
Kind regards and 73,
Steve

Some gud DX there George.
32 ft is an excellent height for a 6 meter antenna. If you believe you need a 50 MHz antenna at 120 ft for 99% of the six meter DX, then create a model of your antenna and run a simulation of the vertical pattern at that height and the nulls will surprise you!!!!!!

I've been lucky with my 6m Oceania contacts. Here is my paltry list of 73 compared to many ADXA members. But I've only had a decent 6m beam at 32' for about 10 years and NO amp. I'm still surprised as to how well it works WHEN CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT. Otherwise, it might as well be a dummy load up there. I got ONE Hawaii and TWO Alaska within about 15 minutes last year to round out my WAS on 6m.

Greetings ADXA Folks,
Be alert in the afternoons on 6 meters for E51EME on 50.313 FT8. Bob was heard by several stations just to our south yesterday. This is South Cook Island. Some of you have worked E51WL who is on North Cook, so E51EME would be a new one for those who may have not worked Bob on 6 meters before. Occasionally he gets on 10 meters in the afternoon as well so listen there if you need that one on 10.
Bob is on South Cook for a couple of weeks “vacation” from his home in New Zealand (ZL1RS). For this trip he brought a much improved 6 meter antenna system, running two stacked 5 element Yagis. His TX power is 1KW so with just a little enhancement you should hear him. His antennas look out over the ocean and his RX is good.
The past two nights (around 3 AM) I’ve watched him on EME and his EME signal has averaged between -20 to -25 (which is a VERY GOOD EME signal). He cannot elevate the antennas so he is only on EME during his moonrise (MR) and moonset (MS).
So, BE ALERT for the next few afternoons and point your antenna around 240 degrees azimuth. You can see his “blog” on his E51EME QRZ.com page.
