Dennis never give up even if it seems you don't have the gear to be able to work them. FWIW, See page 89 in the January qst. You'll see someone using even a less of a setup than what you were using rig wise and about the same antenna wise. What was funny about that contact is he wasn't using a digital interface of any kind he was laying his mic of his rig by the speaker of his laptop to work me.
