Nick,
So were you using some sort of modulated CW on the repeater??

Bill Moore K5HTF died in August 2013 at the age of 80.
Back in the early 70s I didn't go to ARVARF meetings and didn't know many local hams until I got on 2 meters. I finished my HW-202 in 1975. It came with crystals for 146.94 simplex. One of the first guys I worked was Bill. He said he had extra crystals for 22/82 (Mt. Nebo) he'd give me if I wanted to come down to Knoxville and I did.
Bill liked CW and chasing DX but he also liked to talk and since he worked at home, he monitored the repeater all day and was a fixture there. I don't recall a lot of DXers in town in the 1975-80 time period. W5RZ hadn't yet parachuted into Pope County, WB5BHS hadn't come out of hibernation, WB5JJJ hadn't moved down from 6 meters. K5UR did move into town for a time, doing some kind of legal and/or financial work at ANO. So I got a lot of tips on 2 meters from K5HTF and K5UR.
I used to and still do put credits in my log for who turned me on to a new country. So it'll say, "Tip: K5HTF", "Tip: K5UR", "Tip: W5RZ" or even "Tip: ADXA".

Met K5HTF a few times at in-state ham events but last time was many, many years ago. I assume he passed away in the past 2-3 years. He would have been about 87 years old this year. TU for the great story Stan. And, I too remember the late 70s when we lived in LR and there was a gas shortage. We were only allowed 5 gallon maximum because of long lines, so we had to get 5 more gallons the next day and finally had a full tank by the 3rd day. Lot of carpooling going on I remember.

Great story, Nick, about Bill. When I was just a young teenage ham, a couple of us drove down to Knoxville to hitch a ride to the Little Rock Hamfest. That was back in the 70s when the gas shortage was in full swing, so Bill gladly let us ride in his Mercedes!
Somewhere along the way back, Bill discovered he needed some diesel and there wasn’t a station open anywhere. We ended up getting a gallon or two from a farmer willing to share some with Bill and we made it back to Knoxville.
I got to visit Bill later after he’d moved back to OKC on one of my work trips. He was always glad to have visitors, even after all those years. Sure miss him and many of the Elmers that are no longer with us.

George, I was hoping for a clean sweep in the CW SS but those pesky Canadians did me in too. Missed NL, NT and MAR.
The Pakistan story reminded me of one of my DX stories. I don't have many since I'm just a dilettante / fair-weather DXer. But the weather was very fair for DX in July 1980. Pre-internet, we'd sometimes exchange spots over the Mt. Nebo repeater.
Local DX chaser Bill, K5HTF called me up on 2 as he was working AP2MQ on 15 meter SSB. I can't believe he had the audacity, but he asks the guy, "Hey, will you listen for my buddy across town? Oh, and he doesn't work phone, so do you have a key?" I'd tuned to the frequency and in a little while I hear the guy calling me in medium slow CW on a straight key. I exchanged reports with him and put him in the log. I can only imagine how the other US stations waiting to work AP2MQ were fuming while all this was going on.
But that's just part one of the story. Some time later, I received his QSL - but it's blank! That threw me into an ethical quandary. OK, I know I worked him so I could just fill it out, but I think there's a hard rule of DX QSLing that says no blank QSLs. So I put it aside to ponder and a month or two later a second QSL arrived, this time filled out and signed. Problem solved.

I know it's not a big deal to many of you, but on Sunday, I got confirmation on LoTW of a couple of contacts with AP2AM on 20m. Of course they were the typical fish in a barrel, but FT8 did come through and moved me to 260 after sitting at 259 for most of this year.
Hopefully before the end of the year, I will update my DXCC Standing with 1150 Challenge points. Less than 10 to go. If I could actually work some DX on160m, it might become really interesting. But my noise level typically sits around S7 to S9 most nights. Of course it was +20 until I finally tracked down a wall wart for POE about a month ago and removed from service. Great price on that unit if anybody is interested.
Not DXCC, but still. I did have fun with the ARRL SS (phone) this past weekend. Managed to get yet another WAS and even a few Canadians. Needed just five more of our northern brethren to make it a clean sweep. Only heard PE and it was a huge pileup even when he ran by numbers. Never did get him. Didn't really try that hard either. But NT, NL, MAR and QC (of all places) were not heard by me.
Weather observations: Major fog this morning in Russellville and mid 30's. Had about .75" of rain Sunday morning. Lots of leaves on the ground but the Oaks aren't turning loose as quickly as the pecans.
