[ADXA] Massive JA Opening on 6 Meters

Steve,
Thanks for the update. I probably should have checked .323 periodically. Early on in the opening I had a hard time completing QSOs....wide swings in RX level in short interval QSB. I was also running about 250W instead of my normal legal limit. My Flex amp was in Austin having a hardware tweak. It will be back home tomorrow. I think the extra 6-7 db would have helped finish a few Qs. The strongest JA I worked was JE3GRQ. He was -11 at the beginning. Most were around -20db. I worked nine in total. I lucked out last summer and worked BA4SI and a couple of HLs. My path to JA is a bit uphill with lots of pine trees. My 5L LFA is at 82 ft but still 10-15 feet below some of the pine trees in the yard. I have a great path to VK/ZL....about 1/2 mile of water on take off...100ft below the yagi.

Bernie, W3UR, had a report on the 6M JA opening in the Daily DX this morning. W5ZN, our fearless leader, worked 85 JAs in a little over 2 hours. That's just showin' off!

73,
Pat

Pat,

Early on in the opening, the mess on .313 made hearing JA's really tough here. Basically worked no one at the start. Kept checking .323 and again nothing. When the opening "really hit" it's stride, I went to
.323 and started working the 4-5 JA's there, and never left. Within minutes, the receive sequence was decoding 15-20 JA's every time, and fortunately only a rare state-sider. I guess the JA's finally got the word about .323 for big openings.

As I worked the opening, you could sure tell who had the loudest signal, LOL. On any given sequence, there would be 1-3 calling me, lots of single JA QOSs with scattered US stations. And 7 or 8 calling Joel !!!!!! Hihi. Needless to say Joel was working JA quite a while before me .... and still working a few after I was getting "hiss" .....

We put 29 in the log, and has to "not log" at least 3 stations that just couldn't complete with. By far the best JA opening here in over a decade.

Steve, W5KI

I have so many added freqs for DXpedition Fox/Hound in my config I can't tell where the new defaults are! I checked 50.323 a couple of times today and heard a couple of US stations calling CQ DX but no JAs on the "DX" FT8 frequency. I've heard a few EU stations calling on 50.323 but the bulk of activity is on .313. I use a couple of "slices" on my Flex to watch FT8 and SSB/CW on 6M. I only have one antenna so I can't do single band SO2R like Big Dog Joel. There was a lot of CW activity today but I didn't hear any DX on CW. Most of the JA's were in the -10 to -20db/AWGN range ...not quite strong enough for CW unless you have bionic ears. I've reached the stage where I'm blissfully unaware of annoying high pitched sounds...I can't hear them! I'm not sure my XYL believes me?
