Subject: [ADXA] New Member Standings info for Jim, WB5AAA

Jim, WB5AAA, has provided new DXCC Standings info. Jim has put the pedal to
the metal and added about 50 to his 80M total and has achieved DXCC status
with 105 confirmed. He has increased his 40 and 30M totals as well. Jim
now has DXCC on eight bands. He's turning his sights toward 160M to make it
nine! Nice progress Jim.

I was on 30M FT8 around sundown today and worked VR2VAZ, Lok, in Hong Kong.
He had a decent signal..about -15db SNR. I checked him out on QRZ and
found that he lives in a high rise apartment in Hong Kong and has a "Fishing
Pole" antenna for HF. It is a telescoping fishing pole that he secures to
the railing on his veranda. He has a reel of fine wire and a lead sinker
and lowers it to resonance on the band he's working. I e-mailed to ask if
was using the fishing pole antenna for our QSO. He replied that yes, ever
HF QSO he has ever made has been with the fishing pole and 100W! Check him
out on QRZ for photos! He must be facing south because he was only readable
on the long path.

I remember Bill, W5SJ, telling the story of working his last one for #1 HR
from an apartment in FL with a wire hanging off a balcony. Probably QRP
with S9 noise to boot!

Pat, W5VY
