Sometimes its not only knowing where to listen, but where to transmit!

This morning I was lsning to YJ0FWA on 160 meters. I didn't need that
one but they had a decent sig so thought I would pass the time waiting
for VK9C SR lsning to the YJ0. He was on 1828 lsn down and running a big
herd of JA's. There were a ton of USA stations calling 1 to 2 KHz down
but he was not working a single US station. Then it occurred to me that
JA's cannot operate above 1825 so if he is running JA's he must be
lsning BELOW 1825 KHz. I flipped one of the RX antennas NW and sure enuf
I could see a big ripple of JA's calling. I moved the TX down to 1824
and easily worked him.

The point here is it is VERY important to know and understand the
operating privileges of other countries and where they can, and cannot,
operate on the bands. 160 meters is unique in that way. You normally do
not hear EU and Russian's below 1820 and you will never hear a JA above
1825. In fact, for you FT8 guys you know JA's must operate that mode on
1905. JARL is working to get that changed for FT8 but in the meantime
just remember there are some restrictions in other countries and being
aware of them can mean the difference between "IN THE LOG" and "SORRY
OM!".

GL in the DX hunt.
