Here's a couple of interesting places I saw on my latest trip. Fort Selden,
New Mexico, and the Texas Civil War Museum in Fort Worth.
Fort Selden was established in 1865 in an effort to bring peace to the
south central region of present day New Mexico. Built on the banks of the
Rio Grande, this adobe fort housed units of the U.S. Infantry and Cavalry.
Their intent was to protect settlers and travelers in the Mesilla Valley
from desperados and Apache Indians. Several of the units stationed at the
fort were black troopers, referred to as Buffalo Soldiers.
By 1890 criminals and raiding parties were no longer considered a threat as
hostilities eventually lessened and the fort was no longer needed. Like
many small forts in the Southwest the government decommissioned the fort
and it was abandoned in 1891.
One famous person lived here as a child when his father was stationed here.
Can you name him? (No fair using google). Bonus points if you can tell me
where he was born. Will give the answers in later e-mail.
Fort Worth Museum - I had driven by there several times over the years and
finally decided to stop. I was amazed at the quality of this museum.
It's the largest Civil War museum west of the Mississippi River and houses
the most comprehensive collection of Civil War artifacts in the country,
including the largest number of historical Texas battle flags in the state,
along with an exquisite Victorian dress collection.
