These inexpensive receivers use the SiLabs Si4732 receiver chip, which is remarkably good. The same family of chips has AM/FM broadcast receivers which are at the heart of many AM/FM portables (most of the modern Sangeans, for example).
Silicon Labs did some very clever tricks in these receivers; for one, they auto-tune the AM BCB loopstick using an internal capacitor array (you can tell when this happens if you listen with another receiver at the same frequency, you hear a burst of pulses as it auto-tunes). The receiver automatically changes internal clock rates so that internally-generated birdies are always removed from the passband, so on.
The Si4732 receiver is really very good.
