[600MRG] JT9 and split - food for thought?

Last night I had been calling CQ for quite a while with no callers
(that I could copy). A friend told me I had people calling me down
the band. I could see signals below me, but those that were decoding
were other QSOs or CQers. I could see some JT9 signals mixed in with
RFI which were not decoding.

I decided to try an experiment. I sent one period of "SIMPLEX PLS".
After my next CQ I got a caller on my frequency who happened to be a
new state for me. It may be just coincidence. I have no way of
knowing whether this was one of the stations who had been calling me
split. But the experiment may be worth repeating. Maybe alternating
periods of a standard CQ and "SIMPLEX PLS" would be helpful. :-)
