Jay's question is a good one.  I'm obsessed with hi-Q antenna loading coils
but that's a special case.  I seem to remember seeing coils with discs in
old gear: low power applications and rx circuits where the simplicity is
welcome even at the expense of Q.  No doubt all this has been thrashed in
the professional literature many years ago although I don't remember seeing
it.
