Go to www.californiahistoricalradio.com and join up -- $30 a year I think.
Put in your e-mail in the box at the bottom right, and you'll get weekly
reports mostly about our renovation of an old TelCo building (1901) into a
communications museum, but lots of other matters of interest. (And we did
salvage two old TelCo grounds for our system).

I'll see if I can get you John Staples articles.

Our initial focus was SAQ on 17.2 KHz; we found that "weak signal" VLF can
be a challenge. Now 2200m and 630m are calling...

I have but have not yet fired-up an Elad 2. How much internal noise do you
see?
