Hi Chris!
MNI TNX for sharing such a well documented project with us! It will be most
interesting to learn how it works for you - both on EME and on inonospheric modes.
When I first made some meteor scatter contacts a few years ago with FSK441, I was
struck by the very rapid QSB on the waterfall during 6m meteor scatter bursts. If you
are going to be using the IQ+ type of adaptive polarization reception, it will be
interesting to see if this type of QSB disappears.
I know the general rule of thumb is that there is so much jumbling of polarization in
ionospheric modes of propagation, that it makes no difference whether you are
vertically or horizontally polarized. Certainly, those who have worked DX from the
car with a quarter wave whip can attest to the fact that it still works! However, I
wonder if other reports of certain ionospheric signals only being received on
antennas at various heights above ground may also have something to due with
polarization shifts and the fact that ground gain lobes (and nulls) are different for
vertical and horizontally polarized signals. It will be very interesting to see if
your experiments with dual polarization on 6m will teach us anything new about these
signals.
Just in case anyone is thinking about taking on the construction of a four yagi dual
polarized array, I think NZ5N has done a very nice job documenting how it can be done
properly for 2m:
http://www.qsl.net/nz5n/eme4x.htm
Of course, it is more challenging mechanically to pull it off on 6m, but a "small"
array of dual polarized 4 or 5 element yagis on 6m really is not that much larger
than the 10 element beams shown for 2m, and the mechanical design approach is still
very similar (although a bit larger all around).
It will be very interesting to learn more about the effects of fading on 6m as more
people construct cross polarized arrays! Many thanks for taking the plunge! GL and
VY 73, Lance
