I have been on 6FM since the 70s...original radio was an old Motorola
"Lunchbox" portable.....then a Genave GTX-600.....1st contact was with a W9
in IA....friend of mine who was over just about fainted....(he was on 2m and
was floored at how well the 6m FM signal was)...I was hooked..
Current main 6m rig is a Midland SynTech II with a deluxe head so I can
change PL tones on the fly and it has every rptr freq and simplex freq and
still has empty channels available (the STII is 320 ch capable)....best damn
NB ever made...my FT857D NB works great on SSB and CW...but NOT on FM....so
though it is a little more flexible on freq/offset/PL tones, the rcvr gets
KILLED by power line noise where the Midland still hears almost full
quieting!!! (YET my FT690RII has a NB that DOES work on FM.....ARGH!!!!!!
WTF?)
I have had some great fun on 6FM...true SSB and CW segments are open more
than the FM segment (some folks use 50.3 for FM in some areas to catch band
openings better).....but I love when FM Is open...the audio quality is sooo
great.....and gets MUCH better range than 2m FM.....especially simplex!
