Put a couple of QSTs and CQ magazines in with the equipment.  If asked what the
equipment is for, it is easier to explain if you have a magazine to show them.

We carried on and checked radios and alpha amps when we operated as VP5A and
VQ5A, getting into the country was easy, but getting back out both times we were
pulled aside and questioned where we had gotten the equipment, what it was for
and where were we going with it.  Both times the magazines helped explain our
crazy hobby and got us on our way back to the states...

Subject: [VHF] Radios in carry on luggage

I am planning a couple of grid expeditions that will involve commercial
flights, and wonder what experiences others have had with taking radios in
their carry on luggage. Does TSA get very involved in this?  Did you have to
take it out of the case?  Demonstrate it?  Was it a bunch of hoops to jump
through, or very smooth sailing?
