I want to sincerely thank all of you who gave me the
privilege of contacting you while out in DM74
yesterday. That grid is made up of mostly vast cattle
ranches, fields of alfalfa and pinto beans. I drove
out between fields of alfalfa and had a great
location. I managed to make 71 contacts and even
worked a few new grids. The highlight of my trip
was to make a contact on CW with N8II. This made my
day. It gave me not only a new grid but the last
state I needed for WAS on six meters. I have been
trying to get this last one for five years. The
"Lowlight" of my trip is when a skunk came up to my
car and sniffed around to see what I was doing there.
I did a stupid thing. I honked my horn at him
hoping he would go away, and instead, I scared him
and in turn, he honked his horn at me. The smell
was so bad, I had to hightail it out of there. Thank
goodness it didn't get on my car. There is a saying
that "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" but
this old dog learned a new one. YOU DON'T SCARE A
SKUNK!!!! Otherwise, I had a great time. It was
very hot and windy out there in the middle of
nowhere, so couldn't stay more than a few hours.
At age 76, the old grey mare ain't what she used to
be. I managed to work a few old friends out on the
west coast who I knew were looking for DM74 such as
Keith K6GXO and Hank W0RLI.
I will be trying again in July to go out for the
CW contest and am going to DM55 as I did last year.
Hope, no skunks next trip. WOW! Can't handle that.
I ran two mobile antennas, one vertical and one
horizontal, which I found, was a good idea to have
as alternates. It has to do with takeoff angle, buton
the magic band it is all magic. I leave the analysis
up to Bill W5WVO. He is the scientist.
73's to all and many thanks again, especially to N8II.
Stan W5ZF DM65rd and many others.
