[50mhz] new to 6 meters...

Ken,

When the band opens, a vertical will work fine...not as strong as a
yagi...but it works! :)
The only time it hurts you is when the band is NOT open and you want to work
the farthest you can to another station...then being Horiz (since most are)
would be best...you lose 20db when going cross polarized...but like I said,
when the band is open, it doesn't matter...the signals will get bent around
and the polarization will get changed...
I once made a 6m contact with me running 25watts into a 220 5.8wave mag
mount on a steel folding chair! Really! :)

With a 100watts into a vertical, fire up on 50.125 SSB and have a go at it!
The band has been open across the country lately...As for FM, check out
52.525 simplex (and most rptrs are on -1MHz offsets) but SSB will open far
earlier and easier than the FM side (one reason why it is called "weak
signal" on the SSB/CW end). Don't forget to tune down to the beacon band
(50.06-50.08...well that's the US auto beacon band...check before 50.06 for
others)...as well as the CW segment (the entire 50.0-50.1..with most CW
between 50.08 and 50.1)..nothing says you cannot work CW as a nocode ;)

And as for the "early present", you got that the day you became a dad!
(Enjoy..some of us are still waiting).

Hope to work you on the band soon!
