 Howard,
What floor is your apt? If upstairs, if you have a window you can run coax
out it while closed, you can always hide a dipole, etc in trees or
something...believe me, after living in a number of apts, it is possible ;)
Remember, a 2m 5/8wave works as a 1/4wave on 6....even though its not horiz,
it works during band openings ok...if worse comes to worse, try an antenna
inside for 6 (of course with TV2 in Houston, TVI is a possibility)...
50.125 IS the calling freq for stateside....always a good place to try first
thing...plus listening down in the beacon band allows you to know when the
band IS open...of course one day, the Quito, Equador beacon on 50.035,
10watts into a 0db gain antenna iirc, was BOOMING into Houston....and noone
was on the band :(
