The noise blanker in the FT100 series will take S9 ignition noise down
to just about nothing... the IC706 noise blanker is very weak by
comparison. (On transmit, though, the 706 is a lot better - superior
speech processor and rugged final amplifier. But you can't work 'em if
you can't hear 'em.)
