[50mhz] Just worked #50 on 6!

Hi Al,
I know John well, and yes, he worked 6M WAS on SSB, with perhaps a
smattering of CW. Just wanted you to understand the real percentages here:
Probably 98% of the activity on the 50 MHz band is USB, 50.1 through 50.3
MHz. There is also some (though not a lot of) CW activity, 50.1 MHz and
down, usually heard during widespread band openings. (I make probably 5% of
my 6M contacts on CW, and have worked a few grids that way that I never
heard on SSB.)
I have looked on 50.4 MHz for AM activity when the band was open, and though
I'm sure there must be AM activity there from time to time, I have never
heard any, even during extremely strong and widespread openings when there
were literally hundreds of stations being heard on SSB.
So the word is, obviously, if you want to have real fun on 6M, get an SSB
rig and put up a real 6M antenna (just a simple 10-ft dipole is a great
starter). You'll have a blast, especially during the summer and winter
months when the sporadic-E propagation happens.
