Chris,
IMO, given your requirements, the FT-857D is for you. This rig will run 100W
out on all HF bands plus 6m, 50W on 2m, 20W on 70cm. Great DSP, really small
footprint, perfect for mobile. You get it all without being forced to run
QRP (and of course you can easily turn it down to 5W on the fly -- or
anything in between -- if you should want to). Even work 60m band SSB with
high-accuracy TCXO frequency control.
This is basically the same rig as the FT-897D (plus or minus a few bells and
whistles), but in a much smaller package and without the internal battery
capability. I used the FT-897 as a base station radio on 6m SSB for quite a
while, and liked it a lot. The FT-857D should be very similar, but optimized
for mobile operation.
