FWIW its worth I DO have a lab full of HP test equipment as well as several
towers with various 6M antennas. Bench testing is only a fraction of the
story.

The "hottest" setup Ive tested and used is an antique Hallicrafters HA6 tube
transverter with a home brew GaasFet front end fed into a modified Kenwood
TS-830. The combination of extremely low noise figure, very high overload
capability and extremely low phase noise allow me to dig for DX and operate
a contest under the most trying conditions. I dont need or care for lots of
bells and whistles on VHF.

I have several TS-830's and use them as IF's for transverters from VHF thru
microwave.

A DEM transverter is pretty good but I had to remove the overload prone IF
amp to make it useable in my hilltop RF heavy enviroment with a TV/FM/Paging
facility under 2 miles away. The front end is also broad as a barn door and
needed modification.

Ive tested just about every xcvr from TR6 thru 756 PRO-ll and they all have
serious shortcomings for anyone interested in the ultimate in performance.

If I was to buy a modern xcvr it would probably be the latest 756 PRO
version but that would primarily be to replace my aging TS-940 on HF.
