Well I will admit that I am biased but a really good system if you are into 
building kits is the Elecraft K2 for your IF, a Downeast Microwaves 6m 
transverter with an antenna mounted low noise DEM preamp.

The K2 receiver is up there with the 756PRO and the 1000MK II according to 
the QST reviews.  If you already have a separate 6m transmitter then you 
can use a DEM 6m downconverter instead of the transverter.
