[50mhz] 50 Mhz antennas

Living about 15 minutes away from CC I have made a habit of using lots of
their antennas over the years. Usually swap meet specials that required a
part or two.
At one time you could simply drive over and pick up what you needed at very
fair prices.
Sadly, that is no longer true. New corporate owners, new management, etc
have made it a very unfriendly place to deal with.
After a few year radio absense I tried to pick up element tubing to build a
few more modified 6M Boomers plus repair several Skywalker HF monobanders
that had met a few ice storms.
The telephone never got past the voice messages and no replies were
forthcoming.
Finally, an E Mail was answered which basically said....Sorry we dont supply
parts for those any more.
CC has built some nice antennas over the years and some real dogs also.
Speaking of the 617-6B Boomer I notice it is listed on their web page. Maybe
it is available again??
If so it is an excellent starter source of material.
BTW, my modeling of that antenna shows 12.13 dBi gain at 50.135 MHz which
is -1.3dB down for theoretical maximum for that boom length.
The A50-5S is designed for 50-54 MHz so dont expect great f/r at the low end
altho the gain is an excellent 9.9 dBi at 50.135 but the current
distribution is pretty poor.
However by moving the elements around a bit the f/r improves to 28 dB from
50-50.5.
I always design for good performance over the lower 500 KHz since I also
like to play around on AM with a Clegg Zeus/Interceptor.
Since there is a 6M FM repeater here (K1SI) I dont get much of a chance to
use simplex FM except during contests. No effort (yet) has been made on the
computer at this end of the band.
The Hy-Gain 66DX is another antenna that benefits from modeling for the low
end of the band operator. Six and 7 element versions look real nice and I
ran stacked 6el for a few years.
All modeling is with the K6STI YO and AO programs and checked with NEC 2.06.
Altho not the latest; as-built performance tracks very, very well, at least
HF thru 6M.
