I brought my SW30+ to London and operated as M/VA3RR from a 5th floor hotel room operating
after dark when no one could see me deploy my EFHW wire. I did most of my operating between
March 1st and March 8th.
The band seemed to close around the dinner hour, but I managed to work a few Russian and Latvian
stations around that time. The band was never 'open' enough to work anywhere west of europe.
I got up a few time in the middle of the night to see if there was anything to work, but I
didn't hear any signals on the band, other than some loud RTTY and some other wideband
signals I didn't recognize.
Although the SW30+ uses a simple superhet receiver with Gilbert cell mixers, I never experienced
any overloading.
I wish I could have left my antenna hanging out the window during the day, but my room faced
the street and I didn't want any complaints. All said, I wouldn't hesitate to bring my
portable station with me next time I have to travel for work.
