Jerry:
That is a real tough situation. I guess you've already been through The
ARRL's Stealth book. Not sure that would be much help in your situation
anyway. If you don't own a copy, let me know and I'll send you mine. I'm
done with it.
I live in an apartment building also but have a very understanding landlord.
He actually put my antenna up for me. I suspect my landlord is one in a
million.
It's all about compromise I guess, in your case, compromise between your
hobby and your living situation. Best advice I can provide is to keep
experimenting and trying new things. As strange as they look, I have regular
contacts with people using the Isotron antennas. Maybe something like that
at a window might help? I used to use a Buddipole antenna out on my deck,
never from inside the apartment so I don't know how that would work - it's
advantage is it will tune from 40 to 2 meters and is only around 16 feet tip
to tip at the lowest freq.
One of the challenges (fun and frustration) of ham radio is learning to make
the best of a situation. I think this is one of the things that helps us be
better operators.
Good luck & 73,
Kevin - K4VD

Very faint signals at 10.137 area around 15:00 UTC, could not copy
anything. Up the band a little I copied KC0IFQ having a few PSK31
contacts, called him but no answer. KC0IFQ was up and down a lot. Sure
wish I knew a way to radiate a good signal out of my "concrete
jungle". I live in a high rise on the eighth floor of a thirteen story
concrete building. Walls are six inch solid concrete and floors and
ceilings are six inch pre stressed concrete that have a few inches of
empty space in the center. No balcony, no outside antennas of any kind
allowed. So have the 30 meter dipole draped around my bedroom window,
kind of a upside down "U" shape, the ends of the dipole lay on the floor
for about fifteen inches each side of the window. I am not on a
"outside" wall on one of the corners, stuck in the middle of the
building. The walls that has the windows on them is not six inch
concrete but "chicken wire" overlay by brownstone bricks below the
window. Think the window frames are anodized aluminum, double sealed
glass. So with the window that area is about three and half from the
floor of wall. I do not know of any way to put up "stealth" antenna
outside being eight floors above the ground. Also the HRA knows I have
the radio, and have asked about putting up antennas, and have been
flatly rejected. So I know they check on the outside of my apartment .
Would have to be "Spiderman" to put one up outside, HI!
