The transverter, paired with a reasonably current IF transceiver will
probably outperform one of these older rigs with 222MHz.
I've used a FT-736 on 2M and 432. I currently use an FT-847 for these bands
and the 847 with an older DEMI transverter for 222MHz. No surprise, the 847
outperforms the 736.

Compared to the cost of the available 222 all mode radios, the cost of a
transverter is pretty insignificant.

Maybe ICOM 371. Module for FT736.
DEMI transverters probably work better.
