A lot of folks are running inverted L's with elevated radial systems.
Unless you can get sufficient height (eg >200 feet), some kind of
vertical is likely to be a better performer than a horizontal dipole or
inverted V.
The inverted L is a good compromise antenna, and works well when equipped
with an adequate radial system.
NQ4I has done pretty well with 1/2-wave sloping dipoles off a 100+ foot
tower.
Very serious 160m ops use a four square vertical array.
Many use Beverage antennas for directional receiving, since hearing
signals on 160m is the challenge. For those with less real estate, the
flag, pennant or K9AY loops make good directional receiving antennas.
