I remember Heathkit producing single band transceivers going back to the 60s
or 70s. I think it was the 60s since I think it had a green front panel.
Does anyone remember these, and if so, was there a unit produced for 160
meters? Many thanks, Karl Zuk N2KZ Katonah, NY 45 mi. north of NYC.
Karl,
The 160M Heathkit was the HW-18-3 produced in 1968-1969. It was a two
channel crystal controlled tranceiver that had capability on SSB, AM with
controlled carrier, and CW. It used the same final tubes and power supply
(HP-23) as the other monobanders.
Please be mindful that Heathkit also produced two other HW-18 variants, the
-1 and -2. Both were for Mars and CAPS work around 4000 KC to 4500 KC and
won't go on 160M. Only the -3 will.
If you locate one I have a schematic for a VXO that will shift about 50KC.
Let me know and I'll copy it for you.
Additionally, The monobander has it's own internal speaker and wired in
handheld microphone. I have one and really enjoy it. It'll make about 100
watts PEP on SSB, and on AM I run the carrier to about 20 watts and adjust
the mike gain to where I see a slight forward blip of the power meter and the
audio sounds fine.
Regarding "Boatanchors" that will cover 160M, you may want to take a look at
a Johnson Ranger, Viking I, Viking II, Valiant I and II, and the Heathkit
DX-100 among a few others (Central Electronics 20A, etc).
I hope this information helps you and the best of luck in finding something.
