[1000mp] 232 chip

Mac, that was an excellent write up and much appreciated. Thanks for
sharing!

Bought my FT-1000MP new and I still have it and it works fine. Serial
port still works as I have been very careful about interfacing to that
sensitive port.

But, I know some day I am going to have to face that concern, so am
going to order a replacement chip or two. Need to put in the CW chirp
mod, so may as well as do that change out while I have it opened up.

Only minor issue is the intermentant operation of the top right control
MEM / VFO CH pot. Plan on replacing that with the other service work and
to take apart and clean / lubricate the old one to use as a spare.

Great detail and a professional write up.

Dear K6OLY:
Here is a direct copy of a txt document I wrote to myself after a good deal of effort directed to a replacement for the 232 chip:
-----------
Used in FT-1000 MkV: MAX232CWE 16 pin surface mount "wide"
pins are 0.050 inches apart. package is between 0.291 & 0.299 inches wide.
16 pin DIP devices with the same pin-outs include: 0 c to 70 C
MAX243CPE
MAX232CPE
MAX3232ECPE able to survive ESD
unfortunately, DIP pin spacing seems to be 0.100 inches
resulting in about double the length of the surface mounted IC
Thus use of a DIP to S socket will not work.
What was purchased:
ADM202EARWZ improved over MAX3232E able to survive high voltages
ADM232LJRZ direct replacement
Z at end = no Pb
---------------------------
The original chip is too fragile and fails in the sort of environment common to the radio. Attachments are not possible or I would attach data sheet.
I also looked at optical isolators. People do sell “boxes” able to isolate the chip in radio from essentially every hazard. The chip has to be replaced. A socket would be nice, but a beefed-up chip is probably enough.

Well, for some unknown reason, my CAT interface decided to quit... At first, I thought it was my logging software, then the cable interface, now after chasing the serial data pins on the interface, serial data is going in to the radio, but nada on the output. In fact, the SO pin (serial out) is at 0 volts potential, which is not a valid level for RS-232...

After all the above, looks like I am going to have to find an RS-232 driver chip for my 1000mp. I know there have been other posts on this before, but wondered if anyone knows where I may get my paws on one of these drivers? (I haven't even looked up the part number yet!). Any info will be helpful.
Thanks in advance,
