Good information Glenn. Unless folks are using laptops, the best thing to do is buy a serial expansion card from Byterunner Technologies. I build my own systems and when looking for motherboards I make sure there are enough expansion slots. Byterunner has some really good stuff that works on all OS's. Depending on how many serial connection devices you have will determine a 2 port or 4 port(or more) card. The 4 port cards have a dongle so it only uses one PCI slot. Byterunner is a place to keep in mind.

The various brand-names may come and go, so...
The key to success when choosing a USB-to-serial adapter is to AVOID
the ones using Prolific driver. Purchase one with the FTDI
chipset. You should be able to find out 'what's inside' by going to
the website of the manufacturer of the device, if not described on the package.
I don't use one myself (yet) but have learned this from overwhelming
user-evidence described on the N1MM Logger mail reflector.
