you can also pick the Edgeport usb to serial boxes.  While expensive new,
you can get them at a reasonable  (at least to me) price if you watch on
ebay for a while.   You can also use these for FSK as they handle 5 bit as
well.

The key to success when choosing a USB-to-serial adapter is to AVOID
the ones using Prolific driver.  Purchase one with the FTDI
chipset.  You should be able to find out 'what's inside' by going to
the website of the manufacturer of the device, if not described on the 
package.

I don't use one myself (yet) but have learned this from overwhelming
user-evidence described on the N1MM Logger mail reflector.
