George,

I notice the same signal quality disparity on my '1000MP-MkV!

When using the stereo amplifier connected to the AF line jack,
and twiddling the Balance Control, the audio quality and level
is quite different from Main to Sub receiver, and listening to the
same station, exactly on the same displayed Rx frequency produces
a very different audio picture.

Please note that I replaced BOTH the crystal filters in the Sub receiver,
and have a full boat of Inrads on the Main Rx.

One bit of audio weirdness really confused me at first. His signal was S9+20
on both receivers, but sounded bad on the Main RX but good on the Sub RX. I
started thinking my radio had a problem until I realized what was happening.

When listening to the Main RX I was hearing his signal through a 500 Hz
filter plus the broad noise from the Sub RX. Hence, a lot of noise above and
below the RTTY tones.

When listening to the Sub RX I was hearing the his signal plus only the
narrow band noise from the Main RX so the tones pretty well covered up the
noise.
