[1000mp] Compression question

I like to use a small amount of compression on SSB on my original MP. I have
an FL-7000 amp that I run at about 400W. This requires about 20 25 watts out
of the MP. I adjust my mic gain to keep the ALC within the range on the
meter. I have comp turned on. I assumed that compression was a set and
forget and never look at it. I find that no setting of the comp control
gives any indication of compression on the meter. 

When I run the MP alone at 100 watts, I have no problem setting the
compression level. Nature of the beast or something not quite right?
