[1000mp] 1000 DSP

To speak to the DSP I again only have the MP not the MKV. I have no
knowledge of Kenwoods DSP system but what has been inferred is that the DSP
system in the 1000MP is not IF. Well it appears to be as IF as IF got back
during that period of time. The 4th IF in the MP is running at 10.24 Khz
which is a pretty common way DSP is implemented in most all of the recent
history radio's employing IF DSP. (not discussing the Orion here...it's a
different animal) Down convert to a very low frequency and do an A to D
conversion, apply the various algorithms then convert back to analog with a
D to A conversion and then on to some additional filtering and audio
amplification.
In the MP you have a choice via menu control to do standard analog
demodulation or allow the DSP to do the demod. That determines whether
audio or the 10.24Khz IF is passed to the DSP system. (speaking of RX only
here) The user has to make that decision and configure the radio as to his
wishes. I have owned the Icom 756 Pro II, a fully DSP implemented radio
system and it worked quite well...not as flexible as I would have liked but
a nice radio. My MP's DSP system, considering it is 10+ years behind the
Icom DSP design, works very respectably, reducing random background noise,
multiple hets, sharp bandpass filtering as needed etc....
I have owned several outboard Audio DSP filter systems from JPS, MFJ and
Timewave. The Yaesu implementation in my MP works as well as any from those
years and better than most. (my 1000D has the 599+ in the speaker cabinet)
The advantage of the Icom ProII system over the Yaesu MP was that you were
able to keep the interference you rejected with the DSP out of the AGC loop
thus not reducing the sensitivity of the radio in the process. That's a
completely different generation of DSP implementation than is used in the
FT-1000MP series receivers....
IF DSP...YES. Done the way things are being done in the latest generation
of DSP implementation....NO, it's a 10+ year old design why would anyone
expect it to be. I'll bet the FT-2000 is done that way though....maybe with
a few added twists. Don't know, don't own one and probably won't for a few
years if at all.
I still use my FT-1000D the most but am learning to like certain things
about the MP.....Sold the Icom and wouldn't trade my Yaesu's for a Kenwood.
Orion is nice but I don't like the central display philosophy. Just a
personal thing!
Cecil....
