Hello John, 

You want to check if you have loosened the screw holding the VFO ancoder. It is a brass screw. When you tension the spring just be sure that the outer end can't climb up on the thread but sits fixed at the end.

Attempted to take the VFO dial off today, and adjust the tension.  Adjusting
the spring made little difference to the dial tension however I have managed
to loosen off the spindle, which now has a lot of sideways play, and when I
reattach the VFO knob, it turns (left or right) until settled, I assume due
to the sideways play on the spindle.

How can I return this to its original status?
