That is a Maxim MAX232, but be sure to get the suffix letters correct to get
the right package. Is it an SOIC (.300"W) or "skinny" SOIC (.150"W)?  See

There is a string of postings on this net about that job.

I thought my CAT chip was bad and ordered two. Just before I went into
surgery I decided to ring out my series cable and found it was NG.

In any event, the chip is an SMT deal.

Many people say to yank the entire PCBd from the radio, other say
it can be don in situ.

However, the accepted procedure is to dyke the leads and yank the chip.

Then with a pencil tip, unsolder the lead debris and clean the lands.

Then tin the leads on the new chip.

Then glue toe new chip with leads and lands aligned. Let the glue dry.

Then heat the leads and solder the lands.

The put it back together and see if it works.

The chips are something-something, "232MAX" and are a couple of bucks each.

Hi All,

I just acquired a clean mp but unfortunately the CAT appears to be dead.
I've checked the port & cable using my MK5 and they are fine.
Tried all the permutations in the port settings,since I know there are some
variations between the MK5 and the MP. So, looks like a RS-232 hardware
failure in the mp. Anyone on the list replaced that IC before??
(I'm downloading the service manual now.) Any thoughts on something else
I should check???
