The MP and Mark V are two different animals in this regard
Yaesu obviously changed something with the display when they went from
the MP to the Mark V, due to complaints that the MP display was too
bright and the inactive background characters were distracting. (This is
even a comment about this in the ARRL review from '96.)
I think what's happening is not a lingering problem with the HV supply,
but a cap taking a while to charge in some kind of step-start circuit in
the display.
Mine has the delay sometimes and doesn't other times. I've had three
Fields and two of them didn't have the delay, but had dim start-up
displays. My lastest, built in the middle of 2005, has the delay, but a
MUCH brighter display, both during start-up and later.
