[1000mp] key click Field

Noel,
I made the W8JI mod to my Field. I used the fixed resistor version of his
mod rather than the adjustable one. In my opinion, the mod is easy to make;
but access to the RF board is a pain, and scary. I think both the W8JI and
INRAD mods require it. There are several good pictorial sequences on the
VA3CR website that help in identifying parts to remove or move. The biggest
challenge I had was physically removing the RF board. My version of the
Field had less clearance (than in the pictorials) at the front of the board
to allow for removal without stressing the board (the rear connectors
require a "forward-and-up" motion of the board to clear the connectors). The
problem is that there's no "forward" possible until you do a little "up"; so
it's a matter of a little up and a little forward followed by a repeat of
that sequence until the #$@%^ thing is free.
Once that's done it's all downhill. Just be really careful to clear all the
fine wiring harnesses as you remove and replace the boards.
Listening to the modified rig on a separate receiver verified the
significant improvement.
It's not something to approach with great anticipation, but not with dread,
either. Just take your time and go slowly!
73,
Chuck, N4NM
