Hi John,

Actually, the TS-480 (which is analogue) is intended and marketed as a
mobile radio. It and the TS-2000 (which is an IF-DSP radio mainly for
fixed-station use) are the only Kenwood HF rigs still in production.

The only remaining Icom HF fixed-station radio still in production is the
IC-718.

The progress towards a full DSP-based product line is inexorable. The
following quote from a recent "CQ Ham Radio" interview with an Icom engineer
is interesting:

"The DSP filter is technically interesting, but another reason to use the
DSP for the IF filter is the issue of availability of mechanical and crystal
filters for HAM use. It is doubtful that those kinds of filters will be
continuously available in the market forever in the future. The DSP filter
is implemented by software and is easy in the quality control. IC-746 [and
IC-718] was the last transceiver that used the conventional analog circuit
for the RX. ICOM would like to expand of the DSP use to the products in the
lower price ranges."

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ
