[1000mp] Two Older & Inexpensive Mic Options for FT1000MP & MK 5

After some experimenting, I have discovered that I prefer the transmit audio quality I obtain from two older microphones that can be obtained at low cost:

   Electro Voice 664
   Astatic D104

In each case, I much prefer the audio of these two mics over the high priced Yaesu MD-200. In fairness to that mic, I have not played with the internal adjustment.

I have a preference for the EV 664. Given its directional quality, it has another 6 dB of immunity to background noise over the D-104. It also doesn't require the high-to-low impedance buffer that the D-104 requires. I am using its low impedance (150 ohm, pins 3 and 4) output, straight into the mic input jack (pins 7 & 8) on the front panel.

The FT1000MP MK5 settings are:

Car offset (menu 8-9) 0 (no offset)
TX EDSP (menu 4-4) 1 (1st equalization position)

I have received numerous compliments. Interestingly, EEV 664s can be obtained for less than $50, and usually around $25 on EBAY. That's a teriffic value.

The Astatic D-104 also sounds very good (and similar to) the EV 664, but with some external work. First, you'll need a high to low impedance buffer like the one I featured in August 99 QST.
The FT1000MP MK V settings are:

Car offset (menu 8-9) 0 (no offset)
TX EDSP (menu 4-4) 0 (no equalization)

I haven't tried a Heil, or studio mics yet, but I was curious what the old mics would do, and I might be done searching. You need to try either one, the audio is great !

Email for any additional info. I have .pdfs for both mics, and the buffer amp info for anyone interested.
